โรงเรียนเมืองนครนายกตั้งอยู่ เลขที่ 5 หมู่ 7 ตำบลท่าช้าง อำเภอเมืองนครนายก จังหวัดนครนายก สังกัดสำนักงานเขตพื้นที่การศึกษามัธยมศึกษาปราจีนบุรี นครนายก (สพม.ปจนย) เปิดสอนระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 1 ถึงระดับชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ 6 เนื้อที่ 20 ไร่ 24 ตารางวา

อดีต โรงเรียนเมืองนครนายกแต่เดิมเคยเป็นโรงเรียนสังกัดกองการศึกษาพิเศษ ก่อตั้งเมื่อวันที่ 17 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ.2496 เปิดสอนตั้งแต่ชั้น ม.1 – ม.3 ระยะเริ่มต้น อาศัยโรงเรียนวัดท่าช้างเป็นสถานที่จัดการเรียนการสอน และในปี พ.ศ. 2498 ได้สร้างอาคารเรียนเป็นของตนเอง ในที่ดินของกรมชลประทาน จำนวน 18 ไร่ 3 งาน 20 ตารางวา

ปี พ.ศ. 2503 แผนการศึกษาของชาติเปลี่ยนระบบ จาก ม.1 – ม.3 เป็น ป.5 – ป.7 ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2520 โรงเรียนยุบชั้นประถมศึกษาและขยายการศึกษาขั้นสูงเป็นระดับมัธยมศึกษา คือ มศ.1 – มศ.3 และในปี พ.ศ.2527 โรงเรียนได้รับคัดเลือกจากกระทรวงศึกษาธิการให้เป็นโรงเรียนดีเด่น รับรางวัลพระราชทาน เมื่อวันที่ 2 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2527 จากสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี ต่อมาปี พ.ศ. 2534 ได้รับงบประมาณหอประชุม จึงได้ขยายพื้นที่เป็น 20 ไร่ 2 งาน 24 ตารางวา

ปัจจุบัน เป็นโรงเรียนสังกัดสำนักงานเขตพื้นที่การศึกษามัธยมศึกษาปราจีนบุรี นครนายก (สพม.ปจนย.) สำนักงานคณะกรรมการการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ เปิดสอนช่วงชั้นที่ 3 ระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้น ม.1 – ม.3 และช่วงชั้นที่ 4 ระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย ม.4 – ม.6 เขตพื้นที่ให้บริการ จำนวน 20 หมู่บ้าน ได้แก่ ตำบลท่าช้าง หมู่ที่ 1 ถึง 13 และ ตำบลท่าทราย หมู่ที่ 1 ถึง 7
